Do you judge a book by its cover?

I do and even though I shouldn’t, but when you’re walking down the line of books at a bookstore or a library, which are you most likely to pick up? The book with attractive colors and fonts or one that just looks dull.

I know I’d reach for the better-looking one. The cover is the first thing that draws me into the book. (The title being the second) When I see that dull book sitting on the shelf I just automatically think the storyline will be match up to the cover. Or maybe while walking down the YA section I’ll see one book that has cartoon characters on the front that looks like it belongs with the children’s books. I wouldn’t pick it up, even though it could turn out to be a great story.

(This only applies in stores, when I’m on my computer obviously I’ll always read reviews before making up my mind about the book.)

This is just a bad habit of mine that I think many people also have.

So do you judge a book by its cover?

  1. I agree with you, I always judge a book by it's cover unless someone strongly suggest I read it!

  2. I'm guilty of the same thing. Fallen was one of my favorite covers last year, but ended up being the most disappointing for me. The Hunger Games cover never caught my attention, but I only read it because of all the positive reviews and of course I ended up loving it. It just goes to show I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but it's hard not to sometimes.

  3. of course i do! and i don't feel bad about it (for example, Fallen/Torment covers are gorgeous, so I kinda want to read it despite iffy reviews). THe titles, not so much though because most are misleading/irrelevant-ish (like Fallen? that can mean anything)

  4. I ALWAYS judge books by their covers. Sometimes when I see books with really terrible covers I feel sorry for the author b/c I just imagine everyone (including me) skimming over their potentially fabulous story...

Thanks for stopping by Book Love!!

  5. I have been guilty of doing this in the past until I read a book that I didn't like at all but had a really beautiful cover, so I won't be doing that again.
